1.A Raga should have the power of emotional entertainment. It should contain attractive musical phrases and graceful movements of notes.
2. The shape, image, and principles related to the Varnas (ornaments) of a Raga should be such as to render them easy for improvisations. This is very essential for creating an independent image (Roopa) by the individual performer.
3. A Raga should have at least five notes.
4. It is important that a Raga should have an Arohi (ascending movement), an Avarohi (descending movement), a Pakar (musical phrase which when played evokes the mood of the Raga), allotted time of play, Vadi (consonant) and Samvadi (asonant) notes, and other regulations as specified by the established schools of music.
